May you be happy and prosperous。

在这里祝福华人社区的年轻一代;

送给华人社区虎年祝贺词;

别忘了写下来送给您的亲朋好友;

Introduction to the 2022 Year of the Tiger Spring Festival Gala Evening

2022 Year of the Tiger Spring Festival Gala Evening, The Federation of Chinese Associations (VIC.) Inc. hosted by The Online Live Studio

Spring Festival Gala Evening live online commences:

7:30 p.m. on 1 February, 2022. AEST time

How is Chinese New Year celebrated in the Australian Chinese community?

Some locals say: "No matter how simply we celebrate the Spring Festival in Australia, we should not forget the festival traditions of our hometown."

"It's definitely not as big a celebration as it is in China, because Australia doesn't have a long public holiday," others commented.

"No matter how simple, in the multicultural society of Australia, Spring Festival traditions should still be maintained. It is a national tradition with a long history and the symbol of an important oriental festival," said another.

So what traditions are still held by the Chinese community in Australia?

Generally activities are: On New Year's Eve, the whole family cooks a fancy dinner, goes to a local temple to pray for blessings, sends New Year greetings to relatives and friends, and gives red envelopes on WeChat. On weekends, the whole family goes to a lantern show with stalls and markets held in cities. Another important option is to watch the Spring Festival Gala show on TV.

The Spring Festival Gala Show is a huge variety show held by China Central Television to celebrate New Year's Eve every year. Founded in 1979, it was officially launched in 1983 and was identified as a national event in 2014.

Every year when the Spring Festival comes, the whole of China enjoys a holiday carnival!

Overseas Chinese have carried the decades-old traditional culture of the Spring Festival Gala Evening to all corners of the world to celebrate the Lunar New Year through different artistic expressions.

The year Melbourne will host its own Spring Festival Gala

Melbourne will also have a Spring Festival Gala Evening this year, hosted by the Online Studio of the Federation of Chinese Associations (Vic.) Inc. (or FCA). There will be performances from Victoria’s Chinese community, as well as Chinese artistic circles, congratulations from celebrities at all levels of government, blessings from our relatives, and support and Year of the Tiger wishes from various members of the FCA.

As we always say:

May the five blessings (longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a quality life) be with you.

Although Australia does not have a holiday, and the day for the Chinese community is as usual, however, Chinese people everywhere still find time to shop for the New Year's Eve dinner.

Although there is no special Spring Festival atmosphere, the Chinese community in Melbourne and Victoria is still dedicated to celebrating the traditions.

In recent years, when the Spring Festival has fallen on a holiday weekend, the Chinese community has organised major activities to celebrate. When holidays are not available, and especially during the Covid-19 years, the Chinese community has created opportunities to celebrate the Spring Festival Gala Evening with online performances. Hence this year's Online Gala offering in Melbourne.

Through the FCA’s Spring Festival Gala Evening, we hope that families in the Chinese community can sit around the dining table in the evening and celebrate Spring Festival together with multicultural communities throughout Victoria and Australia. Watching the Spring Festival Gala Evening, will add a festive atmosphere to all.

May you be happy and prosperous!

This is probably the most frequently heard Chinese New Year greeting around the world. Even Australian Prime Minister Morrison once quoted this sentence in his New Year's speech.

The Chinese New Year of the Tiger is a chance to celebrate the Year of the Tiger with family members.

The most important aspect of celebrating the Spring Festival is to get together with family members. The Chinese New Year represents kinship and the beginning of new hope. On this day, we are ready to welcome the New Year with positivity and anticipation. It is also a chance to visit elderly relatives you don't often see. Younger people also follow this traditional virtue of respecting the elderly and caring for the young in the Chinese community.

"I remember the first New Year's Eve I spent in Australia."

In 2002, Liu came to Australia to study. Even though she has spent 20 years in Australia, she still remembers that first night vividly.

"I was very lonely because the atmosphere of celebrating the Spring Festival in China is so strong. When I first arrived in Australia, I was homesick."

Liu said that there were not many Chinese New Year celebrations in Australia at that time, but now the celebration has spread far beyond the Chinese community, and local governments are also actively participating in organising happy Chinese New Year activities.

Melbourne is a multicultural city, it welcomes and supports traditional celebrations from different cultures. In recent years, Melbourne’s city government has held activities themed to celebrate the Chinese New Year in Chinatown, Federation Square, on the Queensbridge Red Stage, Crown Casino on the Yarra River and at other activity centres. This has enriched the multicultural life of local residents in Victoria, and also delivered huge business opportunities to Melbourne, its small businesses and tourism.

Let's work together for a better life in the Year of the Tiger.
